The LEA Program

 The beginning of LEAdership.

What makes a leader...

How do you know if leadership is positive?  What kind of leader am I?  These questions concerning leadership have been asked, discussed and debated for hundreds of years.  Leaders and leadership styles play such an important role in how our lives evolve.  Yet, only recently have schools and organizations created programs to help young people develop leadership skills.

People have thought for years that leadership is one of those qualities you were “just born with.”  In fact, leadership skills are developed  -  not inherited.

The LEAdersip Program...

LEA is the beginning of Leadership at Camp Hazen YMCA.  Our mission is to accomplish two goals. The first is to help young people develop the concrete and practical skills necessary to become effective leaders both inside and outside of camp. The second is to develop and refine one’s own counseling, instructional and leadership skills through experience in a supportive environment. This environment will enable you to gain practical experience and confidence by doing, not watching!

LEA I Program

LEA 1 participants must be going into their Junior year of high school.  The program focuses on the development of practical skills in all areas of camp. Each participant also develops skills and experience in a particular chosen area of interest. The LEA I program is a structured, yet flexible

This program stresses group cohesion and group dynamics. The goal is to prepare a potential counselor for all facets of camp counseling, including team building.   Planning activities, instructing a skill, as well as cabin supervision are discussed and practiced on individual and group levels.

Skill development and training will include the following:

  • Camping Overnight

  • CPR with possible certification

  • First Aid with possible certification

  • Life Guard Training with possible certification

  • Teaching & lesson planning in the program areas of your choice

  • Team building as a participant and leader

  • Styles of leadership

  • Counseling  and Communication

By striving to develop these skills, the group of LEA’s with their Director, will become a cohesive team. Learning to support each other by acknowledging each person’s strengths and style is a key component of our LEA program.  This experience will help the group to form close and caring friendships that we hope will last a lifetime!

LEA II Program

This is an eight- week training program for those high school students entering12th grade.

The first two weeks are spent learning how to work together as a group and with young campers. LEA II’s will learn what the roles and responsibilities of a counselor are, how to plan safe activities, and how to balance the relationship of friend and counselor.

For the first four weeks,  LEA II’s will assist in two different program areas where they  will learn the finer points of teaching activities to campers of all ages.  For the second half of the program, they will focus on an activity area of particular interest to them. The LEA II participant will also develop an understanding of programming, scheduling, evening campfires, camp promotions and facilities. Upon the completion of their training, each participant will be well-prepared to apply for a position as a counselor.

LEA II’s will be placed in cabins as assistant counselors after their first 2 weeks, allowing them to use their knowledge and experience. Here is where the true test begins!  They will experience what cabin life is all about and learn how to put their new skills to use in working with children.  They will become mentors, teachers and role models to eight campers in each two- week session.  They will learn first-hand how they can positively influence the lives of children.

For Teens entering 12th grade.

Applicants will be interviewed for acceptance into the program.

Accepted applicants will be paid a $900 stipend over the course of the 8-week program.
