Habitat for Humanity Service Trip

Session B, July 6 - 18

Leadership Service Trips will help you to learn and demonstrate leadership skills and provide an opportunity to give something of yourself to a community.  On this trip you'll travel to Pennsylvania to work on a Habitat for Humanity site. Through volunteer labor, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families.  Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit.

A few days spent seeing the sites of Eastern Pennsylvania combined with a day trip to Hershey Park, the sweetest place on Earth, will round out this experience. This trip is sure to offer you the time of your life while helping those in need of your talent and support.  The trip will end with a return to Camp in time for closing campfire and candlelight ceremony.

Imagine what it would be like to spend part of your summer building an affordable home for a deserving family  Whatever your experiences, think about getting out there and trying something new, traveling to new places, meeting new friends, and well…having the best summer of your life!

At Camp Hazen YMCA we offer service-based Leadership Trips to teens entering their junior or senior year in high school.  Not only will you have a great time, but you’ll also make a difference to communities who need our support.

Many of our Teen Leaders have used their experiences on our service based trips to enhance their college applications or even to help fulfill high school community service requirements.

Take some time to check out this fantastic program.  Talk to your parents…talk to your camp friends from the summer, or talk to your school friends and challenge them to join you for a truly rewarding and unforgettable summer!

Take a chance and get out there…you can make a difference!

Washington Service Trip

Session D, August 3-15

Travel to our nation's capital to volunteer your services at one of the city's largest soup kitchens, DC Central Kitchen.  Spend your mornings helping in the kitchen and preparing meals; then spend your afternoons just around the corner at the Creative Center for Non-Violence, a homeless shelter that has been serving the homeless for over 25 years.

A trip that will tear at the heartstrings but will definitely be one of THE most rewarding experiences.  Take the leap to make a difference.  In your free time, explore the lovely city of DC with your Hazen team and finish off your trip with a visit to Six Flags America (Baltimore/ DC).

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the trip leaders?

Trip leaders are chosen for their experience, judgment and maturity. They are positive role models who strive to ensure that each trip is challenging, safe and fun! Trip leaders are at least 21 years old and have been certified in Wilderness First Aid. Trip leaders participate in an intensive 2-week training prior to camp. All trips will have at least one lifeguard who is American Red Cross or YMCA Certified.

What will be expected of me?

Have fun! It is expected that all participants will show respect for self, peers and trip leaders. You will be expected to take an active role in supporting the needs of the group, whether it is in budgeting for meals, in cooking and cleaning up after a meal, house cleaning or encouraging trip-mates to achieve personal goals. Each team member will also given an opportunity to be the group manager for a day.  This is a great opportunity to show your true leadership skills, making sure that your team is aware of the goals and objectives of the day, that roles and responsibilities are suitably designated, that there is task achievement and that individual needs are being met.  This type of safe and encouraging environment is the perfect place for you to step up and succeed.

WHAT KIND OF WORK WILL I BE DOING?

Habitat for Humanity construct more than one house at a time, all at different stages of completion.  As a volunteer group we will be offering our services to help wherever we are needed.  Typically we have been framing, dry walling, landscaping and painting homes in the past.  You don't need to have previous experience doing these kinds of things, just an open mind and a willingness to learn.  We get to work at the pace that is most comfortable for our group to make sure we do the job properly.  At times the work can be quite physical and most people are surprised at how they are able to handle physical labor.

What is the food like?

You will be pleased with the food. Meals are carefully planned so that they are nutritious and well-balanced. Each member of the group will have a responsibility to prepare, cook and clean up the daily meals.  As an added responsibility, the group will also have to maintain a food expense budget and purchase groceries, keeping in mind the upcoming group plans.  This hands-on experience gives participants a great insight into a "real-life" budget while ensuring that the needs of a family group of 14 people are being met.
