What is it like to work at Camp Hazen YMCA?
Working at Camp Hazen YMCA is
truly like no other job. Camp staff work very hard, have
little time off, make very little money and love every minute of
it!
Camp staff
wear many different hats, (sometimes all at once). You are a
counselor, parent, role model, friend, big brother/sister,
activity instructor, cheerleader, plumber, or whatever the
situation requires. The most exciting part of being on
staff is watching the campers change in front of your eyes
because you took the time to show them you care. You will
help campers grow and love this place we call “Happy Hazen” and
take the skills they have learned and their new found
self-esteem with them to the “outside world”
It won’t
always be easy, but we provide training and support all summer
long. Plus, you will meet like-minded people from all over
the world. Approximately 40% of our staff are
international and we usually have 20-25 different countries
represented on our staff.
Some of the
“nitty-gritty” things you probably want to know are that:
Ø
Cabin
Counselors live in a cabin with 8 campers and a co-counselor.
Ø
Non-cabin
staff live in small cabins in a variety of places through out
Camp.
Ø
After
Staff Training, staff have one night and one day off each week.
Ø
We
provide transportation to nearby Old Saybrook and Westbrook on
Days Off for staff without vehicles
Ø
The
Food Service staff work hard to provide nutritious appetizing
meals for staff and campers. There is a breakfast bar with
granola, yogurt and fruit each morning and a salad bar at lunch
and dinner.
Even though camp has been created
for campers, the staff often gain as much, if not more, from
the experience.
