Program Areas |
| Camp Hazen YMCA
has a traditional camping program that allows
for all campers to succeed. Throughout
their stay with us on Cedar Lake, Campers have
an opportunity to participate in 8 different
classes focused on skill development. Each
camper creates their own schedule by selecting
two activities within a program area where they
would like to learn and grown. Creative
arts, land sports, water sports, and outdoor
pursuits, each have a variety of skill classes
that allow campers to do activities outside of
what they could do at home. Each camper
also has the pleasure of participating in a
fifth program area called Quest which focuses on
the cabin unit. Activities within Quest
are decided by all the campers in the cabin and
can change based on interest level. All of
Camp Hazen's programs are taught by our
energetic, qualified staff members.

Creative Arts
–
Creativity, Imagination, and Havin’ Fun.
|
 |
|
Camp Hazen is a place of inspiration. Our Creative Arts staff
provides an environment of creativity, imagination and fun. Our
craft center is a place where budding artists can try a wide
variety of creative pursuits. Imagine performing in the camp
drama production or learning to play the guitar. Campers can try
their creative hand at tie-dying, paper mache, or even broadcast
your own radio show on our camp radio station. Creative Arts ---
the cool stuff to do! |
|
Land Sports
–
Challenges, Skill Development, and Team Spirit |
 |
| Camp Hazen has team spirit. The
novice or experienced athlete
will find a wide variety of activities that will challenge them
physically,
promote team spirit, and develop their skills. Be a Michael Jordan on the
court, spike the ball on our beach volleyball court, grind
across the fun box and catch air in the half-pipe at the skate park
or even try your hand at “Aussie Rules” football. In Land
Sports, Campers may participate in friendly, competitive
activities such as the Hazen Olympics. Camp Hazen boasts three
athletic fields, an archery range, basketball courts, a tennis
court, three four square courts, and an
awesome skate park. While intense competition is downplayed, we
do encourage fair play, good sportsmanship, and personal
achievement.

Outdoor Pursuits
-
Adventures, Challenges, and the
Great Outdoors.
|
 |
|
Camp Hazen is an adventure. It’s what camp is all about – having
fun in the out of doors. Campers can try their hand at climbing
our 35-foot Carolina Climbing Wall, or advance on to a “real
climb” at our own climbing site. Some campers may choose to grab
a fishing pole and try to land one of the wide-mouthed bass in
our lake while others learn wilderness survival skills like fire
and shelter building. The real adventurer can climb one of a hundred
different routes on our 50-foot Alpine Tower, or mountain bike
in the surrounding state forest. The choice of activities in the
Outdoor Pursuits area is quite varied and wildly fun. Activities
fluctuate for the different age groups and are guided by very capable
and trained staff who consider safety a personal priority. |
|
Water Sports
- Splashing Around, Sand, Sun, and
Swimming Fun! |
 |
| Camp Hazen is wet and wild. The Camp Hazen waterfront centers
around pristine Cedar Lake, a 68-acre spring fed lake. With its
sandy bottom and ample dock space, this facility is an excellent
teaching and safe recreation area. All campers take swimming
lessons until they reach the YMCA Flying Fish level. Lessons
aren’t all that happens at the waterfront, campers can try out
some of the hottest water sports around – kayaking, windsurfing,
or canoeing and sailing. Nothing teaches more respect for the
elements, or for equipment, than learning to sail. We offer a
fleet of sailboats with outstanding instruction , all under the
watchful eye of our American Red Cross trained Waterfront Director, lifeguards and
instructors.

Camp
Hazen YMCA is committed to helping youth develop

also on the development of specific skills.

| Discover,
explore, achieve, and investigate. Quest is
about finding out who you are, about how our
environment works, about developing
relationships and about having fun! Discover
your potential on our 35ft Giant Swing, Zipline
or High Ropes course or explore our 150 acres of
beautiful woodlands. There’s a great opportunity
to make gooey oobleck in our Captain Planet

a talk radio program. Quest is about individuals
achieving success within a team, about knowledge
and a great sense of adventure.

| Specialty Camp is a separate, one-week camping program. Campers
choose one of the following as an area of focus: treetop
adventures, kayaking, sailing, horseback riding, mountain
biking, skatepark, fishing, windsurfing, or drama. Each day, campers have a 2
hour training block in their area of specialty. During
non-specialty times, campers have opportunities to participate
in the other program areas: Creative Arts, Land Sports, Water
Sports, and Outdoor Pursuits. Specialty Camp is a great
opportunity to concentrate on a specific area AND to try many
other camp activities as well!

Living
and Dining Camp Style |
 |
Campers will enjoy a unique living experience in our clean,
modern and spacious cabins. Living with eight campers and two
counselors adds to the fun, spirit, and friendship of the summer
experience. Cabin life is crucial in our view...we spend a great
deal of time and attention in training and supporting the cabin
counselors. The cabin group is like "family" at camp and it is
important that everyone is part of the family while here.
Each day is a lesson in responsibility and personal growth.
Counselors guide the campers in cabin clean-up, observance of
the schedule, and decision-making in daily activities.
Evenings are spent with the cabin or village group in a variety
of exciting games, campfires, or all-camp events, and end back
in the cabin with a counselor-led "cabin chat." Topics range
from the daily activities to environmental issues, and from
personal values to future dreams.
The dining hall is the favorite location for songs, socializing,
and meals. Campers sit with their cabin family and eat meals
prepared by our experienced Food Service Director. Meals are
well-balanced, nutritious, and appeal to even the most finicky
of appetites.
