Hi Session A Campers! This is Special Ops Stuey here and boy am I excited for summer to arrive.  We've created some really cool programs just for YOU!

WHAT IS IT?

Camp Hazen YMCA has created Special Options just for our Session A Campers.  Our goal is to provide each participant with a safe, FUN, and memorable experience.  Campers who register for our Session A 2008, June 22-July 4, will be able to add on Special Opportunities for an additional fee. 

 

When is it?

Special Ops campers will spend 10 hours during the first week of camp (2 hours each day) participating in their activity.  Some Special Ops may require campers to be transported off site for additional programming and scheduled field trips

 

who teaches it?

Special Ops campers will be supervised by Camp Hazen YMCA's mature, enthusiastic, creative, and well trained staff members at all times.  Programs are instructed by professional staff within their field of expertise.  Campers will be assigned to groups according to age and, in some cases, ability.  There is always an emphasis on teamwork and friendship within each group.

 

Animal Encounters

Program Fee: $125

Each day at Hazen brings you face to face with some of nature's most incredible animals.  Curious Creatures, Ray of Light Farm, Wind Over Wings, Ka-Bi's Siberian Huskies, and the Mystic Aquarium will all be sharing their ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS with you. 

YOU WILL INTERACT WITH...

Chinchillas...Tarantulas...Pythons...Llamas,,,Horses... Alpacas...Miniature Donkeys...Screech Owls...Hawks...Ravens...Bald Eagles...Siberian Huskies...Penguins...Sting Rays...Sea Lions

 

THE PROGRAM

The program is designed for campers in grades 3-10 and will take place from Monday to Friday during the first week of Session A.  Campers will be assigned to either the morning group or the afternoon group depending on their grade level

MONDAY: Curious Creatures will present a two hour hands on workshop featuring ferrets, chinchillas, tarantulas, a huge python, and more.

TUESDAY: Campers will travel to the Ray of Light Farm for an original farm tour and a close encounter with a vast number of animals.

WEDNESDAY: Wind Over Wings will bring four raptors including a Bald Eagle to Hazen for Special Ops campers to meet. 

THURSDAY: Ka-Bi's Siberian Huskies will bring their team of sled dogs to camp for the day for Special Ops campers to get to know. 

FRIDAY: Campers will travel to Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration for the day to visit sting rays, sea lions, and the extremely close up Penguin Contact program.

scuba camp

Campers must be able to swim and be comfortable in deep water

Program Fee: $125

Does the idea of swimming and breathing underwater get you PUMPED?  Do you love to explore where no one has gone before?  Have you thought about become a SCUBA Diver?

Professional Dive instructors from the New England Dive Center instruct campers in the basics of open water diving.  The small groups will be practicing both snorkeling and diving techniques right here in Cedar Lake.

THE PROGRAM

The program is designed for campers in grades 3-10 and will take place from Monday to Friday during the first week of Session A.  Campers will be assigned to either the morning group or the afternoon group depending on their grade level

MONDAY: Campers receive an orientation and an explanation of all equipment before being issued their gear for the week and then getting into the water

TUESDAY: Instructors will cover the Do's and Don'ts of Snorkeling and SCUBA diving and then spend the day snorkeling.

 

SPEND YOUR SUMMER IN THE LAKE

WEDNESDAY: Today campers will finish the snorkeling lesson and start hooking up SCUBA equipment

THURSDAY: Campers will learn how to set up all SCUBA gear and perform a group entry into the lake.  They will focus on breathing under water today.

FRIDAY: Today is all about Diving!

Camp Hazen YMCA's SCUBA camp is a great program for families that are interested in getting a taste of what SCUBA diving is like before taking a certification course.

Golf Camp

Program Fee: $125

Campers will learn the basics of the full swing and short game.  They will spend time driving, chipping, and putting.

Program fee includes 10 hours of instruction by PGA Professionals including on course play at Lyman Orchards Golf Club

THE PROGRAM

The program is designed for campers in grades 3-10 and will take place from Monday to Friday during the first week of Session A.  Campers will be assigned to either the morning group or the afternoon group depending on their grade level

MONDAY: Campers will learn the rules and etiquette of the game.  They will focus on how to grip the club and why each club is different.  They will spend time working with high lofted irons so that campers see the ball going into the air.  Campers will practice posture, setting up the golf ball, and swinging the club.

TUESDAY: Heading back to Lyman Orchards Golf Club campers will focus on both the backswing and forward swing.  They will practice the downswing and finish off the day by hitting woods.

WEDNESDAY: Campers will be evaluated on their individual development and practice on both irons and woods.  They will begin to learn the fundamentals of chipping and end the day with a FUN contest.

THURSDAY: Today will be all about the bunker and putting skills and will prepare the campers for playing on a course by building on their driving and chipping skills.

FRIDAY: Campers will spend the day playing on the course and gain experience keeping score and competing in a FUN and inclusive manner.

circus arts

Program Fee: $125

CAMPERS CAN LEARN...

from a wide variety of circus skills that include:

Unicycle...Acrobatics...Wire Walking...Stilt Walking...Clowning...Juggling...Diabolo...Devil Sticks...Plate Spinning...Pyramids...Object Balancing

At the end of the session campers will have the chance to step into the center ring and show off some of the exciting circus skills that they have learned.  With an emphasis on fun and teamwork, everyone will feel like they are the star of the show!

THE PROGRAM

The program is designed for campers in grades 3-10 and will take place from Monday to Friday during the first week of Session A. 

MONDAY-TUESDAY: Campers participate in a Circus Buffet trying out a huge variety of circus activities

WEDNESDAY: Camper will choose the two acts they will be performing and have time to practice with Cirque Du Jour. 

THURSDAY: Acrobatics and Pyramid practice as a group and a run through of the show.

FRIDAY: Set up the Circus.  Practice! Practice!  Finally its show time!

paintballing

Program Fee: $140

BEGINNERS AND ADVANCED PAINTBALLERS WELCOME...

If you are ready to join the fast paced world of paintball or are already a paintball fanatic, then this SPECIAL OP was designed for you. 

Campers must be age 10 or above by the start of the program

 

THE PROGRAM

Campers participate in 90 minutes of paintball for 5 consecutive days at one of Connecticut's premier sites: Hogan's Alley Paintball.  Campers will receive safety instruction, all rental equipment, Camp Hazen YMCA staff supervision, and the opportunity to work together with other campers.
