Rainy Days at Summer Camp: What Happens When the Weather Doesn't Cooperate?

Spoiler alert: Camp doesn't stop when it rains.

Parents often picture summer camp filled with sunshine, blue skies, and afternoons on the waterfront. While we love those classic summer days, rain is simply part of life outdoors—and at Camp Hazen YMCA, we're ready for it.

In fact, some of the stories campers tell for years afterward begin with, "Remember that session when it rained all day??"

Light Rain? We Keep the Adventure Going.

Our first choice is always to continue our regular program whenever it's safe to do so.

A little rain rarely gets in the way of having fun. . Just the other day, one of our soccer classes spent the afternoon playing in a gentle rain, laughing, sliding, and having an incredible time. Those are the kinds of camp memories that last for years.

As long as conditions are safe, a little rain often makes activities even more memorable.

Safety Always Comes First

Of course, there are times when heading indoors is the right choice.

When rain becomes heavy or we hear thunder or see lightning, our staff quickly moves campers into one of Camp Hazen's many indoor spaces. Every activity area has detailed rainy-day plans, and every staff member knows exactly what to do.

We often joke that we have backup plans for our backup plans—and it's true.

Preparing for changing weather is something we do long before campers arrive each summer.

Rain Doesn't Mean Learning Stops

One of the things we're proud of is that our activities continue to teach new skills, even when they're indoors.

Rainy weather doesn't mean learning stops. Our instructors simply shift the focus while keeping campers engaged with their favorite activities. Sailing classes might practice points of sail, learn wind theory, or master important knots. Climbing instructors teach belay techniques and equipment knowledge. Creative Arts hardly skips a beat, with projects and creativity continuing as usual.

Campers are still learning, still laughing, and still spending time with their friends—just under a roof instead of under the sun.

The Best Kind of Indoor Camp Fun

If the weather keeps everyone inside for a while, camp takes on a different—but equally special—feeling.

When the weather keeps us indoors for an extended stretch, we slow the pace just a bit and lean into some of the coziest parts of camp life. We often build in an extended Siesta, giving campers extra time to relax with their cabin or yurt mates. Board games come out of the cupboards, card games appear on every table, and camp favorites like Magic: The Gathering bring out some quirky-fun moments. Campers read, play games, and simply enjoy spending unhurried time with the friends they've made.

These quieter moments are an important part of camp, too. In a summer that's usually full of constant activity, a rainy afternoon gives campers a chance to recharge, strengthen friendships, and enjoy the simple fun of being together.

It's classic camp.

When the Rain Lasts... We Get Creative

One rainy afternoon is one thing.

Several rainy days in a row call for something bigger.

If the rain continues for multiple days, we begin thinking even bigger. Rather than simply repeating indoor activities, our largest buildings become the setting for camp-wide competitions, giant games, trivia contests, and team challenges. Sometimes the weather even calls for some of our favorite traditions—like a camp-wide MTV Night—where cabins perform dances, skits, lip-sync routines, comedy acts, and other unforgettable performances for the entire camp community.

Many campers will tell you these unexpected rainy-day traditions become some of the highlights of their session. Rain may change the schedule, but it never changes the energy, friendships, or fun that make Camp Hazen special.

A Little Rain Can Make Camp Even Better

One of the lessons camp naturally teaches is resilience.

Weather doesn't always go according to plan, and that's okay. Campers learn to adapt, stay positive, and make the most of whatever the day brings. They discover that fun isn't dependent on perfect weather—it's created by great friends, enthusiastic staff, and a willingness to embrace the moment.

Sometimes that means paddling across the lake under blue skies.

Sometimes it means laughing through a rainy soccer game.

Both are part of the camp experience.

You're packing for another adventure.
